I Didn’t Want Her to Use an Amateur

When my sister told me that she was going to have a handyman repair her roof, I asked her to please not do that. She had told me that her roof had sustained some damage during a storm, and she was given a good deal by a local handyman who does odd jobs here and there. I told her that a professional company that does roof repair in Brooklyn NY would be much better for her, but she told me she could not afford one. I countered that with the fact that she couldn’t not afford one.

That did confuse her, so I explained my reasoning to her. Before I did, I made sure to find out all the details on her handyman first. He was not insured, and he did not have tools made specifically for the job at hand. He was also just purchasing supplies from a local home improvement store. While there is nothing wrong with that, it did mean that she would end up paying a higher price because he would not get the bulk discounts that the bigger companies have. That was not even the biggest issue though.

I told him that he was not insured, and that could come back to haunt her should anything happen to him. She needed an insured company that has years of experience in repairing roofs. She also needs a company that has the proper tools and the best materials possible. Her handyman could not purchase the best materials because then his cost would far outweigh the costs of a professional roofer in the first place. I don’t have anything against a guy trying to make a buck, but I do want to make sure he is prepared for the job first. The only one prepared for this job is a professional roofing company, and that who is my sister ended up using.
